Alexei Gvishiani - Biography

Prof. Alexei Gvishiani, born in 1948. Graduated from the Moscow Lomonosov State University (MSU) in 1971. PhD in mathematics from MSU in 1974 and D.Sc. from the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1984. Full professor of mathematics since 1989. Deputy General Director of the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPE RAS ), Director of the Geophysical Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GC RAS ). Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine . In 1984-1996 Chairman of the Coordinating Committee “Data Exchange and Centres” of International Lithosphere Program (ILP). Vice-President of the European Mediterranian Seismological centre (EMSC) since 1994. Vice-Chairman of the International Council of Science (ICSU) Panel on World Data Centres ( WDC ) since 1995. Chairman of the National Committee of RAS of the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA). Vice-President of the Earth Data Network for Education and Scientific Exchange (EDNES). Visiting professor at Institutes of Physics of the Earth in Paris (IPGP) and Strasbourg (IPGS) since 1991. Actual leader of the EU TAP project STACCIS (SU 1116,1996-1999, EDNES supervisor for various IST projects. Author of more than 150 scientific papers and five books published and translated into many languages. Range of interests includes mathematical methods of artificial intellect and their application in geophysics, IT developments and tools, development of telematics in the CIS and Baltic countries. Alexei Gvishiani is well-known in the world as the leading Russian specialist in the sphere of geological-geophysical and engineering –seismological databases.
