The CODATA Newsletter is published quarterly and includes articles and updates on CODATA activities.
In December 2003, over 172 countries participated in Geneva in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). The Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action approved by the participants recognized that science has a central role in the development of the Information Society. Efforts are now being made to put the Plan of Action into motion and working groups are being set up to find solutions and reach agreements in the fields of Internet governance and financing mechanisms.
At the first World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) meeting in Geneva, December 2003, 175 countries adopted a Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action . It was recognized by these countries, in paragraph 7 of the Declaration of Principle, that "science has a central role in the development of the Information Society. Many of the building blocks of the Information Society are the result of scientific and technical advances made possible by the sharing of research results".
On September 1-2, 2005 an International Workshop was convened in Paris on “Creating the Information Commons for Science: Toward Institutional Policies and Guidelines for Action.” The workshop was organized by CODATA with the joint sponsorship ICSU, ICSTI, INASP, UNESCO, and TWAS, and the collaboration of the OECD. More than one hundred individuals from about twenty-five nations participated, forming an assembly with a wide range of expertise and practical experience in many domains of science, information management, and related areas of the social sciences, law, and public policy. They were joined by representatives of international organizations and decision-makers in national governments with responsibilities for public science and technology policies and public research funding.

The Data Science Journal is a peer-reviewed electronic journal publishing papers on the management of data and databases in Science and Technology. Details can be found in the prospectus. The scope of the journal includes descriptions of data systems, their publication on the internet, applications and legal issues. All of the Sciences are covered, including the Physical Sciences, Engineering, the Geosciences and the Biosciences, along with Agriculture and the Medical Science.
The 20th International CODATA Conference, held in Beijing on 23-25 October 2006, drew over 500 scientists and data professionals from all over the globe.
The 25th CODATA General Assembly was held in Beijing on 26-27 October 2006 during which new Officers and Executive Committee were named.
CODATA, the ICSU Committee on Data for Science and Technology, announces that the fourth recipient of the CODATA Prize is Dr. John R. Rumble, Jr. of the National Institute of Standards and Technology ( United States ). Dr. Rumble is cited as he has been a leader and an innovator in the world of scientific and technical data for over three decades.
